DROME Magazine | Ugly Babies :: The Silent Strength of Liu Xia

19/09/2015

An exhibition of rare beauty. Raffaella De Chirico presents a selection of thirteen photographs of Liu Xia, a Chinese artist, photographer and novelist, part of the project De Chirico & Udovich Con-Temporary Art, curated by Guy Sorman.
Liu Xia is one of the most remarkable artists from China and is also the wife of Liu Xiaobo, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate in 2010. She has paid her association with her husband with the ban to display and publish her creative work in China and, when it became known that Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Prize, she was placed under house arrest without any legal basis.
Using only black and white imagery, Liu Xia’s photography describes both the national renaissance and the repression of contemporary China. Strange dolls that she calls her ugly babies are intended to escape the incomprehensible censors, representing the human condition in China. Not to miss.
