Luigi Stoisa lives and works in Selvaggio di Giaveno, Turin, where he began his artistic career in the late 1970s during his studies at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Turin, graduating in Fine Arts. His artistic practice developed during the 1980s, and since then his entire poetics has been rooted through materials transformation—an unstoppable process that alters forms, surfaces, and meanings. At the core of his practice is tar, a material in perpetual transformation, symbolizing an unceasing metamorphosis. Fascinated by the evolving nature of materials, Stoisa moves easily
between painting—explored in numerous forms—sculpture in terracotta and bronze, mixed-media installations, and drawing, which he considers the primal manifestation of an idea. He made his debut in 1984 with a solo show at Galleria Tucci Russo in Turin, presenting Narciso, an installation using tar and paint, establishing himself as one of the most original voices of the Italian postmodern scene.
